Up the Coast

Since leaving New York City, we have traveled to Salisbury Beach, MA and Camden, ME

Salisbury Beach was a nice respite from long days of travel to NYC and our long day at the 911 Museum. We visited the nearby town of Newburyport, a historic seaport on the Merrimack River 35 miles or so northeast of Boston. Newburyport was once a thriving fishing, shipbuilding and shipping center. Visiting the Maritime Museum, we learned that in 1791 the 55-ft Massachusetts built in Newburyport patrolled the coast for smugglers and escorted merchant ships to the Custom House. The Revenue Cutter Service, first initiated out of Newburyport, was one of five federal services that now comprise the USCG, that’s why Newburyport is the official birthplace of the U.S. Coast Guard.
